In November the evening arrives early. As the window turns indigo, the lights go on and the day spent outdoors is washed from the hands. Evening hand care begins at that moment of transition.

Hands carry more at night than they did in the morning: the cold of the street, repeated washing, the friction of keys, bags and papers. Whatever was applied during the day has mostly gone by dusk. Night is when the hands settle the account of the day.

For that hour, Soie has ELEGANT TIME, an elegant, refined fragrance that evokes dressing for the evening. Here we lay the steps of an evening routine alongside the notes of this scent.

A scent for the window at dusk

ELEGANT TIME lifts the enchanting sweetness of osmanthus and tuberose with oriental spice, for a gorgeous impression with a firm core. It is not merely sweet. The outline of spice keeps the fragrance clear even in the softer air of night.

The notes are osmanthus, ginger, cardamom, tuberose, muguet, jasmine, sandalwood, musk and cedarwood. On first application the sweetness of osmanthus rises together with the warm sparkle of ginger and cardamom.

As the minutes pass, the white flowers of tuberose, jasmine and muguet gather, and the fragrance eventually settles onto a soft base of sandalwood, cedarwood and musk. The progression is unhurried, like watching the light fade from a window at dusk.

Osmanthus has a particular place in a Japanese autumn. For a few weeks in October and November its sweetness drifts along residential streets at dusk, often before the tree itself is noticed. ELEGANT TIME opens with that memory and then dresses it for the evening.

What hands need at night

The purpose of evening hand care is to give back what the day took and to let the hands rest while you sleep. Anything applied before bed stays on the skin until morning. Because it is not washed away as it would be by day, this is the time when moisturising is given the longest to work.

The back of the hand has little sebum and thin skin, so it is the first to show the effects of dryness. The knuckles and the skin around the nails also dry quickly. At night there is time to attend not only to the back of the hand but to each finger in turn, all the way to the nails.

That unhurried quality is the real value of evening care. Unlike a rushed application during the day, the time spent slowly smoothing the serum in settles both the hands and the mind.

Night is also the time when the hands are washed least. Between clearing up after dinner and the following morning, they hardly touch water at all, which is why moisture given before bed has such a long, uninterrupted time to stay with the skin.

The bedtime routine

After a bath, or after the last wash of the day, place one or two pearl-sized drops of hand serum on the back of one hand. Bring the hands together, spread it over both, and work it in with the palms.

Interlace the fingers so the serum reaches the spaces between them. Stroke each finger lightly, one at a time, so that moisture reaches the skin around the joints. Finish by pressing gently around each nail, where the skin dries most readily. The whole sequence takes a minute or two.

A serum that leaves no stickiness will not transfer onto bedding, and there is nothing to stop you reading or glancing at your phone afterwards. On very dry nights, a hand cream can be layered over the serum.

If you wear rings, remove them before applying and put them back once the serum has settled. The skin beneath a ring is one of the places most often missed, and the evening is the easiest time to reach it.

Closing the day with scent

The sweetness and spice of ELEGANT TIME settle naturally into the evening. The scent rises as the serum is smoothed in and lingers faintly when the hand rests on the pillow. Scent is said to reach the parts of the brain that handle emotion and memory, and repeating the same fragrance night after night slowly builds a signal into daily life: when this scent appears, the day is over.

Turning a scent into a signal for night is easier when the order never changes. Wash the hands, smooth in the serum, lower the lights. Once the sequence is fixed, the body begins to recognise the evening the moment the fragrance rises.

This is not a fragrance reserved for night. People who prefer a composed impression wear it by day, and it is easy to wear at work. Yet just as osmanthus drifts through city streets at twilight, we think ELEGANT TIME is heard most clearly after the lamps are lit.

Soie's hand serum

Enlight Hand Serum is a beauty serum designed only for the hands. It combines EGF and KGF, which are skin-conditioning ingredients, with moisturising ingredients including five ceramides and peptides, and it sinks in lightly without stickiness, a texture well suited to the slow application of the evening. Moist Fragrance Hand & Body Soap is available in the same fragrance, so the scent can be layered from the last wash of the day.

We have written more about evening care in our note on the night hand care ritual. ELEGANT TIME and the other four fragrances are described on the fragrance page, and the serum can be found in the hand serum collection.

Turn on the lamp, wash the hands, smooth in the serum. Spending a few minutes of the evening a little more carefully, as if dressing for dinner, is perhaps the quietest way of cultivating beautiful hands.
